STARVED or STARVATION ROCK
Starved Rock State Park, Oglesby, IL
The Native Americans that lived in Illinois were known as the Illini, or Illinois Confederacy. The Illini were made up of a dozen or so smaller tribes. Around the mid 1700’s, there was war between the Illini tribes and the neighboring Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes. The Illini took shelter on The Rocher, which on top of. the French had built a fort around 1683. The Ottawa and Potawatomi surrounded them on three sides with the river blocking the fourth side. Eventually the Illini starved as they could not get any food, and anyone who surrendered was killed. Many jumped to their deaths. There have been reports of the sounds of war whoops and drums, along with the shrieks of those starving to death. [41°19’11.4″N 88°59’15.3″W]
