Medal of Honor Recipients – Civil War Tour

The Medal of Honor (MOH) is the United States Armed Forces highest military decoration. It is awarded to those American military personnel who distinguish themselves through acts of valor. These Medals were first established in 1861 during the Civil War. There are three Medals for each of the Armed Forces: Army Medal, Navy Medal and Air Force Medal. There are currently 3535 Medal of Honor Recipients. This tour is of the graves of those who earned their Medal of Honor during the Civil War.

ANDREW O. APPLE (1845-1890) – GRAVE
Third Battle of Petersburg – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on April 2, 1865, at Petersburg, VA. Corporal Apple displayed conspicuous gallantry as color bearer in the assault on Fort Gregg. He was part of Company I, 12th West Virginia Infantry Regiment, US Army.

DAVID AYRES (1841-1916) – GRAVE
Battle of Vicksburg – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on May 22, 1863, at Vicksburg, MS. Sergeant Ayres displayed gallantry while storming defenses at Vicksburg as part of a volunteer forlorn hope unit. He was part of Company A, 57th Ohio Infantry Regiment, US Army.

WILLIAM PERKINS BLACK (1842-1916) – GRAVE
Battle of Pea Ridge – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on March 7, 1862, near Elkhorn Tavern, AR. Captain Black single handedly confronted the enemy and checked their advance. He was part of Company K, 37th Illinois Infantry Regiment, US Army.

JOHN CREED (1819-1872) – GRAVE
Battle of Fisher’s Hill – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on September 22, 1864, near Strasburg, VA. Private Creed displayed extraordinary heroism while capturing the enemies flag. He was part of Company D, 23rd Illinois Infantry Regiment, US Army.

Awarded for his actions on August 5, 1864, on Mobile Bay, AL. Quartermaster Jordan performed with skill and courage while helping the USS Oneida past enemy forts. He was on board the USS Galena, serving in the US Navy.

Battle of Waynesboro, VA – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on March 2, 1865, near Waynesboro, VA. Private O’Brien captured a flag and a Confederate Officer with his horse and equipment during the Battle. He was part of Company A, 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry, US Army.

WILLIAM HENRY POWELL (1825-1904) – GRAVE
Sinking Creek Raid – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on November 26, 1862, at Sinking Creek, VA. Major Powell led 22 men, who attacked and captured an entire Confederate camp of soldier, taking over 100 prisoners, without the loss of any men. He was part of 2nd West Virginia Cavalry, US Army.

WESLEY JAMES POWERS (1845-1902) – GRAVE

Georgia Operations – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on April 3, 1865, on the Oostanaula River, GA. Corporal Powers voluntarily swam a river under heavy fire to secure and retrieved a ferryboat, used for Union troops to cross the river. He was part of Company F, 147th Illinois Infantry regiment, US Army.

LOUIS JEANOTTELLE SACRISTE (1843-1904) – GRAVE
Battle of Auburn, VA – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on October 14, 1863, at Chancellorsville, VA. First Lieutenant Sacriste saved from capture a gun from the 5th Maine Battery and also delivered orders which resulted in saving from destruction numerous Union soldiers. He was part of Company D, 116th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, US Army.
