The Medal of Honor (MOH) is the United States Armed Forces highest military decoration. It is awarded to those American military personnel who distinguish themselves through acts of valor. These Medals were first established in 1861 during the Civil War. There are three Medals for each of the Armed Forces: Army Medal, Navy Medal and Air Force Medal. There are currently 3535 Medal of Honor Recipients. This tour is of the graves of those who earned their Medal of Honor in lesser known conflicts and even in peacetime.

JAMES BELL (1845-1901) – GRAVE
Indian Wars – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on July 9, 1876, at Big Horn, Montana. Private Bell delivered messages to General Crook at the imminent risk of life. He was part of Company E, 7th US Infantry, US Army.

RICHARD HEARTERY (1847-1912) – GRAVE
Indian Campaigns – Army Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on August 30, 1881, at Cibicu, AZ. Private Heartery performed bravely in action. He was part of Company D, 6th US Cavalry, US Army.

JOHN HENRY HELMS (1874-1919) – GRAVE
Interim 1899-1910 – Navy Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on January 10, 1901, at Montevideo, Uruguay. Sergeant Helms rescued the ship’s cook from drowning. He was on board the USS Chicago serving in the US Marines.

WILLIAM MEYER (1863-1926) – GRAVE
Spanish-American War – Navy Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on May 11, 1898, at the Battle of Cienfuegos, Cuba. Carpenter’s Mate Third Class Meyer displayed extraordinary bravery under heavy fire while cutting communication cables. He was aboard the USS Nashville, serving with the US Navy.

SAMUEL F. ROGERS (1834-1905) – GRAVE
Korean Expedition of 1871 – Navy Medal of Honor
Awarded for his actions on June 11, 1871, at the Battle of Ganghwa, Korea. Quartermaster Rogers fought valiantly beside his mortally wounded commanding officer, Lt. McKee, during the capture of the Korean Forts. He was aboard the USS Colorado serving in the US Navy.
