Chicago’s sandwich scene goes well beyond the well-known Italian beef and hot dogs and is shaped by a mix of immigrant deli traditions, neighborhood spots, and regional comfort food. A big category is the classic sub sandwich, often called hoagies or grinders elsewhere, which in Chicago delis usually comes stacked with layers of turkey, ham, roast beef, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, and Italian dressing on a long roll, sometimes toasted and sometimes served cold. These subs reflect the city’s strong Italian-American deli influence, but they’ve evolved into everyday staples found in corner sandwich shops and grocery delis across the city.
Another major category is the deli-style sandwich, especially Jewish deli traditions that appear throughout Chicago, featuring rye bread sandwiches like corned beef, pastrami, roast beef, and turkey, often paired with mustard or Russian dressing. While not unique to Chicago, these sandwiches are deeply embedded in the city’s food culture through longstanding delis and neighborhood institutions.
Chicago also has a strong tradition of fried and griddled sandwiches. The breaded steak sandwich, which is particularly associated with the city’s South Side and Mexican-American communities, features a thin breaded beef cutlet served on a roll with marinara sauce, lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Alongside it, fried chicken sandwiches—especially from local fried chicken chains—are hugely popular, typically served on white bread or buns and often paired with mild sauce or hot sauce depending on the neighborhood style.
You’ll also find unique Chicago-born creations like the jibarito, a Puerto Rican-inspired sandwich that replaces bread with flattened, fried plantains and is usually filled with steak, chicken, or pork, plus garlic sauce, lettuce, and tomato. This reflects the city’s large Puerto Rican community and is one of Chicago’s most distinctive contributions to sandwich culture.
A uniquely Chicago creation is the “gym shoe” sandwich, a hybrid deli sandwich that typically combines corned beef, roast beef, and gyro meat, along with lettuce, tomato, onion, and Greek-inspired toppings like feta and tzatziki or gyro sauce depending on the shop. It is most strongly associated with South Side sandwich culture and reflects the city’s blending of Greek, Italian-American, and deli traditions into a single overstuffed, heavily layered sandwich style.
Beyond that, Chicago sandwich culture includes a wide range of everyday club sandwiches, tuna melts, grilled cheese variations, and specialty toasted sandwiches found in diners, cafes, and campus eateries. Across all of these, the common thread is that Chicago’s sandwich identity is less about one signature item and more about a layered mix of immigrant traditions, working-class comfort food, and neighborhood-specific variations that reflect the city’s diversity.
